Only a week after picking up his first win in the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series at the Pro level, Darren “HotSauce” Hardesty Jr. was right back in the dirt; racing in the Lucas Oil Regional series at Glen Helen Raceway. Originally, HotSauce was going to race only in the regional series, to get a better feel for his Competitive Metals, Bilstein, ORW, Mickey Thompson Tires, ReplayXD, SPY, Lucas Oil, Bink Designs, Alumi Craft Pro Buggy before taking on the pros. He took to the Pro Buggy quickly; reaching the podium in his first three rounds of competition. Lucas Oil Officials gave him the green light to race at the highest level and he has done exceptionally well.
He was at the regional race at Glen Helen for several reasons; to protect his points lead, to get more seat time before rounds 9 and 10 of the pro series and he never misses the opportunity to mix it up in competition.
HotSauce had the fastest qualifying time on Saturday. The front row was inverted for the race, putting Darren back in 6th place on the grid. He picked his way through the field but ran out of laps; he finished second.
For Sunday’s race, Darren was the number one qualifier again. During the race, he jumped out front and stayed there but it wasn’t a given. “I flew into the lead on the table-top jump before the front straight,” said HotSauce, “I had a little contact during the pass but I made it stick. With 3 laps to go, my brakes were going away. I had brake pressure to the right rear caliper, nothing else. I almost spun a couple times but I was determined to hold onto the lead. The guys in the Regional Series are getting faster every round, it felt good to take another win. After taking the checkers, I was afraid I would not be able to stop on the road up to the podium.”
With any luck, Darren’s string of wins and podiums won’t stop either. HotSauce heads right back to Glen Helen Raceway for rounds 9 and 10 of the pro series on July 18-19.
